The Shire's largest township is Wonthaggi, which is also home of the historic State Coal Mine.
Wonthaggi's coal history dates back to 1909 when the area was a major supplier of coal to the Victorian Railways and industries.
Today, with the coal long gone, Wonthaggi is a flourishing town and the largest shopping centre in South Gippsland.
Wonthaggi's commercial area includes an extensive range of shops. The area has three hotels, three motels, two caravan parks plus holiday rentals. These accommodation facilities serve Wonthaggi and the nearby attractions of Cape Paterson, including its fine surf beaches and the adjoining Bunurong Marine Park.
Sporting interests are well catered for with an excellent 18 hole golf course, bowling greens, tennis and squash courts and heated indoor pool.
There are several beaches close by including beautiful Harmer’s Haven which is a great spot for long walks or family fossicking through the rocks.
The State Coal Mine was active between 1909 and 1968 and is now managed by Parks Victoria. Enjoy a guided underground tour (many led by former miners) of Victoria’s last black coal mine. Walk down a gently sloping tunnel and ride in a cable hauled coal skip. Visit the Mining Museum, see models, photographs and tools of trades from a bygone era.
